Revolution of Litochoro
The museum dedicates a special area to the history of the Macedonian Revolution, with emphasis on the Monastery of St. Dionysius. This important time period is presented extensively, seeking to uncover the history of the region.
During the Macedonian Revolution of 1878, Litochoro emerged as the seat of the Revolutionary Government, making a crucial contribution to the overturn of the Treaty of San Stefano, which established Great Bulgaria and incorporated Macedonia to it. During the same time period, after the naval battle of Navarino, revolutionary movements emerged in Central Greece, with the Monastery of Saint Dionysius on Mount Olympus playing an important role, despite its rubble-like state.
The passion of the Revolution was enflamed throughout the Greek territory, with the local rebels of Olympus actively participating in the revolutionary battles, organizing frequent uprisings and ambushes. A momentous occasion in the struggle for freedom that was destined to remain in the annals of time. "The Revolution of Olympus", that took place in Litochoro at the foothills of the mountain, was a revolution that spilled a lot of blood—blood that forged inextricable links to the subsequent history of the Greeks in Macedonia until their final liberation in 1912.
The documentary screened at the museum includes rare photographs and period paintings, incorporating new technologies, 2D and 3D animation, as well as 3D representations of historical figures.
